Bassas da India 100 francs 2012 (African Women)

In stock

10.00

Bassas da India is an uninhabited, roughly circular atoll that is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. The Bassas da India was first recorded by Portuguese explorers in the early sixteenth century as the "Baixo da Judia" ("Jewess Shoals"). The Judia ("Jewess", for the ancestry of its owner Fernão de Loronha) was the Portuguese ship that discovered the feature by running aground on it in 1506. The name became "Bassas da India" due to transcription errors by cartographers.

It is located in the southern Mozambique Channel, about halfway between Mozambique and Madagascar (about 385 km further east) and around 110 km northwest of Europa Island. The rim of the atoll averages around 100 m in width and encloses a shallow lagoon of depth no greater than 15 m. Overall, the atoll is about 10 km in diameter, rising steeply from the seabed 3000 m below to encircle an area of 80 km2 .

The atoll consists of ten barren rocky islets, with no vegetation, totalling 0.2 km² in area.

This issue is part of a series of coins dedicated to French Overseas Departments and Territories.

Crozet Island 100 Francs 2011

The Crozet Islands are a sub-antarctic archipelago of small islands in the southern Indian Ocean.

The Crozet Islands were first discovered on 24 January 1772 by the expedition of Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, a French explorer. His second-in-command Jules (Julien-Marie) Crozet landed on Île de la Possession, claiming the archipelago for France. Marion du Fresne named the islands after Crozet, having already named Marion Island after himself.

France originally administered the islands as a dependency of Madagascar, but they became part of the French Southern Territories in 1955.

In 1938, the Crozet Islands were declared a nature reserve. In 1961, a first research station was set up, but it was not until 1963 that the permanent station Alfred Faure opened at Port Alfred on Île de la Possession (both named after the first leader of the station). The station is staffed by 18 to 30 people (depending on the season) and does meteorological, biological, and geological research, maintains a seismograph and a geomagnetic observatory.

This issue is part of a series of coins dedicated to French Overseas Departments and Territories.

Island of Pabay 1 pabay groat 2012

The island of Pabay (57 16N 05 51.5W and NGR 675270) is located 2.5 miles from the village of Broadford on the South side of the Isle of Skye. It is 360 acres in size, diamond shaped and predominately flat, the highest point being 28m above sea level with cliffs on the North and East shores.

Pabay is known worldwide for its unique geology consisting of fossils, Pabba shale and other features. Due to the inaccessibility of the island it has escaped the impact of modern farming methods. A fully modernized home with its own electricity supply (both diesel and wind power) is located on the South side of the island together with numerous farm buildings. Access to the island can only be made by boat or helicopter.

The name Pabay is derived from an old Norse word (the Norwegians ruled this part of Scotland for many years around 1000AD) meaning "priest's isle" and there are the remains of a 13th century chapel. In the past the island was completely wooded and the tree planting scheme now underway will return Pabay to its original sylvan state.

The Island of Pabay has been issuing its own stamps since the mid-twentieth century. This is the first coin issued by the Island of Pabay; this issue has been officially authorized by the current owners of the island.

Buck Island is an island of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. It is privately held. A former owner had begun to build a bridge between Buck Island and the mainland of Tortola, but construction ceased when it was discovered that under British Virgin Islands law that would create a right in favour of the general public to cross the bridge and use the island's beaches. The island also has an obsolete airstrip on it, which is now in ruins. The coins from Buck Islands are very scarce and hard to find.
