La Désirade (the desired) is an island located in the Caribbean Sea belonging to the French overseas region, it belongs to the department of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles.
Its area is 20.64 square kilometers and its population is currently about 1600 inhabitants of which the vast majority live in the settlement of Beauséjour.
"The Wish" was the first island sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage, who took possession of it on behalf of the crown of Spain. Like other West Indian islands, it served as a hideout for pirates or privateers who attacked the Spanish possessions overseas.
It later passed into French hands until now.
